In 2000 I was backstopper of the project: ‘Establishing a national GIS database for nature protection in Poland’ sponsored by the PIN-MATRA programme of the Dutch ministry of agriculture.
Designing a sustainable extension system in South Russia
As interim deputy teamleader of the EU project: ‘Agricultural Extension Services in South Russia’, I co-authored its’ inception report in 2000. The aim of the project was to set up a sustainable extension system via the local branch offices of the Farmers’ Federation.
Manual on Analysis and Planning for Rural Development
In 2002 I wrote the manual ‘Methods for the analysis and planning of rural development‘ for SNV. The methods that are explained and discussed include: RRA/PRA, RAAKS, SEAN, PTD, OOPP, Gender Analysis and Participatory Action Research. Hardcopies and CD-Roms of the manual were distributed worldwide.

In 2003 I drafted a discussion paper on Institutional- and Organisation Development issues relevant for SNVs’ new policy on Capacity Building.
Marketing advisory service on organic farming in the Netherlands
In 2004 I assisted a Dutch consultancy firm on organic farming to develop a marketing / acquisition plan for the Dutch market.
Key note address National Symposium on the Albanian AKIS
In 2007 I was asked to deliver the key-note address to the five-year National Symposium on Agricultural Extension and Research Linkages in Albania. After my presentation several working groups discussed the main topics and generated recommendations to increase involvement of private actors in the Albanian AKIS. The report ca be downloaded here.
Training manuals on value chains and cooperatives
After providing a sucessful training to Afghan NGOs, I was asked by InterCooperation / Helvetas to write two Training Manuals for NGO staff: 1). Value Chain Analysis and Development. 2). Business Planning for Cooperatives.
Review of an IFAD / WB rural development programme
In 1995 I was the agricultural expert in an mid term review of the IFAD/ WB sponsored North Eastern Rural Development Project in Albania (budget: 18 million USD). As a team we wrote a proposal for next three years. The main issues were agricultural extension and rural credit.
Interactive Organisation Development of an Albanian NGO
In 2001 I evaluated an Albanian rural NGO. I assisted the staff and the board in making a self assessment of the organisation and to assess its interaction with the farming community. The Interactive Organisation Development methodology was used to formulate recommendations for improvements.
Learning through peer reviews by rural NGOs in Albania
In 2001 I assisted five rural development NGOs in Albania to evaluate their own work through a peer review and learning process . The main activities of the NGOs were support to informal groups via informal credit and agricultural extension.
Evaluation Cereal Banks programme in Ethiopia
In 2004 I was teamleader of the evaluation of the ‘Cereal Bank Promotion Program’ in Ethiopia, implemented by a local NGO. I designed the guidelines for field visits by a local consultant. Next I had to validate his findings through field visits and a stakeholder meeting.

Creating the Ethiopian Cereal Bank Promotion Platform
In 2004 I designed the Ethiopian Cereal Bank Promotion Platform in cooperation with six local and international NGOs. At the same time a long-term strategic plan for action research into economically oriented farmers’ organisations was drafted.
Local Market Development in Kyrgyzstan
In 2004 I evaluated three Local Market Development projects implemented by local NGOs in Kyrgyzstan which worked with informal groups and micro-finance. A value chain analysis was done as well. Based on the outcomes a new, comprehensive and value chain based Local Market Development programme was designed which is still operating today.
Evaluating the Livelihood Approach as analitical framework in project planning
In 2007 I was teamleader of the evaluation of the Food and Nutrition Security Support programme of an International NGO that aimed at introducing the Livelihood Approach as the analytical framework for all its Food and Nutrition Support programmes. The programme worked in seven countries. I visited Benin, another team member visited Nicaragua. We used the Most Significant Change method to understand the impact of the programme.
Evaluating a horticultural development project, Afghanistan
Review of the EU sponsored ‘Perennial horticulture development project for Kahmard district, Afghanistan (2007-2010), implemented by a French NGO. The project worked on all aspects of the apricot value chain: production, post harvest, marketing, export and cooperative development.
Sub sector analyse on fruit and vegetables of Albanian smallholders
In 2008 SNV asked me as teamleader of a sub-sector analysis of fruit and vegetables produced by smallholders in Albania. My tasks were to coordinate the data collection and to do the stakeholder analysis. Based on the outcomes we selected a limited number of value chains and proposed how SNV could support these.
Evaluation Korca Rural Innovation Support Programme
In 2008 I evaluated the Korca Rural Innovation Support Programme (KRISP) in Albania; a three-years extension and capacity building program implemented by a consortium of four local NGOs. The components were fruit production, livestock development (dairy) and setting up a rural innovation platform.

Market survey in eleven districts in Afghanistan
On request of the World Bank I designed and implemented a market baseline survey on fruits and nuts in eleven districts in Afghanistan in 2009. Major findings are that traders on small markets are inefficient and few traders add any value to the produce (e.g. by grading or storing). Those who add value do not get better margins, but they can increase their market share. Recommenations focused on shortening value chains, support to value adding activities and working on quality standards. The report can be downloaded here.

In 2009 I did a case study of the Baghlan Cheese Factory in Afghanistan for the research programme ‘Public Private Cooperation in fragile states’. The research was lead by Clingendeal Institute. The report can be dowloaded here .

Evaluation of an Afghan Community Development project
In 2010 I reviewed an Integrated Community Development Project in Dawlatabad district (Balkh province, Afghanistan) where a local NGO supported six cooperatives engaged in carpet weaving, livestock rearing and rural shops. Based on the review a capacity building program was formulated on programme formulation and on business planning for cooperatives.
